TRANSPERSONAL COUNSELLING

A START

I think the easiest way to explain what Transpersonal Counselling is like is to start with an example. I’ve decided to use the example of pain, but really I could have chosen any symptom or situation, such as anxiety or relationship breakdown to demonstrate how the transpersonal approach to healing works.
The main idea here is that:

Q: Is pain a cue to take a painkiller?

A: Well quite often it is. Pain is at best annoying and at worst life defeating. No wonder we wish to move away from it and as quickly as possible. BACK

Q: Is there an alternative way to cope with pain?

A: Whether or not you do decide to take medication there is an opportunity to address the pain in a way that can alleviate your discomfort and open the doors to a healing resolution with Transpersonal Counselling. BACK

Q: Why me and why all this pain?

A: Symptoms are like messengers from your bodys central intelligence directing your attention to imbalances not just in your body, but in your thoughts, your day to day life and your Heart. BACK

Q: Is there a message in pain? How can I find out the message of my pain?

A: Yes, by listening to your body with all your senses. Transpersonal therapy facilitates you with this process. BACK

Q: Is this helpful? I mean is it worth attending to pain?

A: Pain is an attention seeker! Or even an A-TENSION SEEKER! The intensity of your pain is in direct proportion to how much it has been ignored, blunted or projected. Usually addressing your pain directly alleviates quite a lot of it. With enough residual pain left behind to keep you in awareness that there is healing work to be done on whatever issues the pain represents. BACK

Q: OK then, how do I ‘address’ pain?

A: First and foremost, you focus on it. Feel it. Let it be. Follow the felt sense. It has physical properties. Feel them, describe them. And as the sense changes you stay in tune with the flux and ride it like a wave with your attention. Over and over and over until the Beast is convinced you won’t abandon it. With this, the intensity of the pain naturally calms down. And this is just the beginning. There is a lot more action lying behind that pain. This will require further exploration. BACK

Q: How is ‘exploration’ helpful?

A: Explorations are a way of seeing into and connecting with yourself. Quite often your focus is taken up with many demands of the external world. You simply cannot find the time or space to go into retreat and be still and conscious with your inner being. The soft subtle voice of your heart or Soul is easily lost in all our goings on. Coming to counselling quite often is about taking time out to be with yourself and conduct informative and inspiring explorations. BACK

Q: Will this fix my pain?

A: This is the million dollar question when it comes to healing.

Healing Vs Fixing

Healing differs from the medical model which is focused on ‘fixing’. Put simply, the logic of the medical model looks something like this, ‘here is the symptom or syndrome, now what to do to stop this or fix it?’ As with all health professionals, the goal is to alleviate suffering and the medical model achieves this quite often by suppressing symptoms or removing ailing body parts. Quite often the ‘fix’, involves medications. These medications can be a blessing but can also be a curse.  Side effects can range from dizziness and nausea through to panic attacks and catatonic depression. For many of you, myself included, our initial moderate symptoms treated with immune suppressing medication eventually evolved into a cycle of chronic illness and drug dependency.

In the long run, I found that attempting to ‘fix’ my moderate symptoms with medications ultimately led to greater and greater dis-ease, whereby my suffering was extended and ‘the fix’ was really no ‘fix’ at all. And this is considered ‘normal’ in our culture.

So many of us have come to that point in our lives where we know that ‘this just can’t be right’ and that ‘this is definitely not living’. It is usually from this ‘breaking point’, that we begin to crave change and seek out alternative solutions to our crisis. BACK

Q: So how is healing any different to fixing? Back to the million dollar question, will my ailment or situation be fixed if I embark on a course of healing?

A: The answer in all honesty sounds like a maybe/probably. But more importantly:
It is something that only you as the seeker of your own true well being can answer.
Choosing the path of healing is the beginning of your Heroine’s or Hero’s Journey!
And as with all Heroic journey’s they are steeped in:

This is incredibly important work that I am quite happy to disguise as play!

Q: How can counselling be like play?

A: Play is a great way to leave behind your day to day concerns and tap into your heart and free up your creative side. BACK

Q: But I’m not very creative, maybe I won’t benefit from such therapies?

A: Interestingly, many of you are scared to actively engage your imaginations. Somehow, somewhere you have been instructed that the imagination is the exclusive realm of the child’s mind and not for adult use, unless of course, you are employed in a field where your imagination is highly valued.
Our culture is also big on promoting the idea that in order to be taken seriously as an adult you must focus your expression on your concrete Mind and it’s functionality in day to day ‘reality’. Our culture emphasizes the need for logical, rational, objective views, facts and figures, scientific proofs, linear sequences of thought and so on.
On top of the culture marginalizing the imagination, it is also likely that you have absorbed this norm internally whereby you harbor doubt in your own ‘artistic’ abilities. Goodness knows how that ‘art critic’ got lodged in your brain, but somehow it did. And at the end of the day it tells you that you cannot express yourself artistically. But really,
Art or play therapy has very little to do with ‘artistic ability’.
Transpersonal Art Therapy is very much about letting your subtle, quiet, wise, guiding  inner voice speak to you in its language. BACK

Q: Do you mean to say that the Heart (Soul) has its own language?

A: Yes. As both an artist and a healer, I am clear in the belief that the imagination is the language of the Soul and that in utilising this most wondrous gift for healing, we are able to directly and deeply connect with the Heart of any matter. From this, we can begin to travel our paths with greater awareness, connection to life and meaning. BACK

Q: How is Imagination a language?

Just as the Concrete Mind speaks to us via word as thought and ideas, our Heart (Soul) speaks to us through non rational, non linear means, such as image, metaphor, dreams, visions, bodily sensations, colours, smells, tastes, tones, memories, sound and so on. BACK

Q: Is Body language really a language?

A: Yes, your body speaks. Your body is in a constant dialogue with you.
The Body’s senses make up a huge part of your INTELLIGENCE.
Your Body is Intelligent, it harbours a Natural Wisdom. BACK

Q: I’m not sure if I am wise!

A: Your Psyche is a deeply mysterious part of your Being. It has an uncanny sense of timing. It somehow knows exactly what you need and communicates this to you at  the precisely the right time, quite often via bodily sensation, dreams, synchronicity, signs, imaginal journeys, divination,  and so on.
Your task is to get in touch with Psyche and follow her. BACK

Q: How Do I Get In Touch With Body Wisdom and Why Should I Follow It?

A very important task for us all in our heady culture, is to get in touch with our feelings. Interestingly, this has a double meaning. Feelings can be your emotions but can also be what you physically feel.
If emotions are hard to feel, then why not try connecting to bodily sensations and practice feeling and observing those.
Transpersonal Therapy engages and develops one’s feeling function by focusing on bodily sensations, drawing attention deeply into physical Being, meditating, and evolving daily practices for living in greater awareness of the Body. As well, all the sensory apparatus is explored and evolved, such as Inner Vision, Hearing, Smell and Taste.
Traversing the world of senses, in particular, our inner landscapes is of the essence if we are to get to know ourselves and get on with the incredible and noble work of healing. BACK

Q: And what of Dreams?

A: Dreams are rich with meaning. Guiding us and alerting us. They speak to us directly from the Unconscious. Meaning that what is revealed in dreams is something we did not already know.
Unfortunately the understanding of dreams is again in a shabby state in our culture. Most of us have learned to not take our dreams seriously as they are not rational. And there’s been a whole host of books come through in the New Age Movement that have skewed the approach to seeking meaning from dreams. These books tell us about specific meaning for certain symbols. And yes, there is a great Universal Language of symbols that is deeply embedded within us all.  But there is also a very personal set of meanings that go with each and every image.
It is this personal set of meanings that is of the essence when examining our dreams.
Transpersonal Therapy allows one to explore personal meaning inherent in all Imaginal Processes. BACK
